![]() Addictive, challenging, unique – I can’t think of a title that’s better suited for the hardcore amongst us. Games like Minigore and iDracula may live up to the title of “twin stick shooter” more faithfully than Tilt to Live (which admittedly has no sticks), but no other iPhone game has captured the spirit of that genre as well as this has. Still, if you’re both persistent and patient, you can be wielding lightning and posting scores in the millions in no time. Considering how blisteringly difficult things can get, unlocking all of the additional weapons may be an insurmountable challenge for some. When the game starts you’ll be limited to only 3 weapons, and you’ll unlock more as you progress and earn achievements. Surviving past that is nearly impossible without practice, and even after a solid week of play I’ve only just scratched the 4 minute mark. In your initial attempts Tilt to Live is a game that will be played in 1-2 minute intervals at most. The only real concern we had with Tilt to Live is that, for players who lack patience and skill, the experience will be fairly short lived. ![]() Need to change it? Just tap the screen at any time in the game and you can set it again. Once you get comfortable, you simply tap “set” and you’ll get perfect tilt responsiveness for however you’re holding the device. You can choose from a top-down 0 degree angle, a normal 45 degree angle, and a straight up 90 degree angle which most of us would use when lying down (that’s probably why they call this option “sleepy.”) Of all the options though, it’s the custom setting that I found myself using again and again. Tilt to Live solves this problem by asking you how you’ll be holding the device at the start of every game. Even if a game works, as soon as you change position things tend to get all wonky. Many games on the iPhone have had poor tilt functionality, so we wouldn’t blame you if you were a little sceptical. And yes – we’re saying this about a game based on tilt control. Like Bejeweled 2 or Canabalt, Tilt to Live offers up that kind of quick fix, pick-up-and-play gaming that will please players time and time again. You can use this to your advantage, luring them close to detonate a nuke or leading them away from the wall to create an opening and make a hasty escape – but most of the time their constantly growing presence just leads to a painfully quick death.Ĭhallenging doesn’t even begin to describe what Tilt to Live offers, but then again, neither does “fun.” This is one of those rare iPhone experiences that avid gamers won’t only enjoy, they’ll savour. The red dots will be drawn towards you constantly, almost like your ship was a slow-working magnet. The weapons provide you with a great way to defend your ship, but getting to those weapons can be tough business. You’ll detonate nukes by touching a red power up, send out a deadly pulse wave after grabbing a purple one, or turn into a spiky circle of destruction after snagging the blue. You’ll need to destroy the dots to survive, but you can’t shoot – so how do you do it? Weapons randomly appear around the screen and provide a short but effective combat ability to your ship. You’ll navigate a small arrow-shaped ship around the screen by tilting your iDevice, all the while avoiding the relentless pursuit of some deadly red dots. ![]() It feels strange calling Tilt to Live a shooter, because you technically don’t shoot anything. The end result is a crazy, challenging, perfect shooter experience that could only happen on the iPhone. Tilt to Live is an arcade shooter that combines the frantic pace of games like Everyday Shooter with the tilt mechanics of games like Labyrinth. ![]() When is a twin stick shooter not a twin stick shooter? Spicer, invites Buddy, Jovie, and Susie, over for a dinner party, which is the perfect chance for Buddy to prove that he’s normal. Gone are the 7000 daily calories of sugar, gone is the elf outfit, gone is the name “Buddy.” Instead, Buddy now wants to be called the most normal name in the world, “Brian.” This doesn’t have the intended effect as Buddy’s attempts at acting normal only make him weirder. One day, Susie comes home and yells at her father for not being “normal.” Buddy is so mortified and desperate for his daughter’s love that he researches what “normal” is and changes his entire life to fit into this new category. I mean, her dad *does* walk around in an elf outfit everywhere. It’s a shock for Susie but the more she thinks about it, the more sense it makes. The three become instant besties, which is the first time Susie’s told by someone that her dad is weird. Soon, Susie is going to school, making new friends, and that’s when she meets cool girls Jess and Jamie. Even though everyone thinks his stories are imaginative and creative, all Buddy’s doing is telling real stories from his childhood.ĭespite how much Buddy loves New York, the reality is that Susie’s getting older and it’s not the best place to raise children. Buddy has become a successful children’s book author, specializing in Christmas stories, of course. Buddy and Jovie are now married and they have a 10 year old daughter, Susie. So they hired Scot Armstrong, who’d written Ferrell’s breakout movie role (Frank the Tank in Old School), and this was the result.Įlf 2 takes place an indeterminate number years after the first one. The vibe I’m getting is that the studio had one shot to get Ferrell on board – a great script. You know when straight-shooter James Caan (who plays Buddy’s father in the movie) is the biggest cheerleader for your film, you’re in trouble. The main creatives behind the show simply didn’t like the movie. This might partially explain why, even though Ferrell was offered 29 million dollars to reprise his role, the movie never happened. Which is bizarre because Elf is a really good movie. And yet, even today, there seems to be this distance both parties have created between themselves and the movie. So when it became this giant hit, everyone was surprised. It was a ‘prove it’ role for both of them. No one really wanted to make it – both director Jon Favreau and Ferrell have publicly expressed their reservations about making the movie at the time. Elf 2 was written by Scot Armstrong (Old School, The Hangover 2).ĭetails: 119 pages – First Draft – July 29, 2005Įlf always seemed like a movie that everyone who participated in it endured, rather than enjoyed. He stated that, after reading the script, he felt like he’d be making the exact same movie, and didn’t feel like he could face the public if he did that. Ferrell talks about why he and longtime collaborator Adam McKay split up (McKay wanted to take over the world and Ferrell didn’t feel like he had the bandwidth to join him) as well as why he turned down Elf 2. Premise: Several years after becoming a viral sensation in New York City, Buddy and his wife decide to move to the suburbs to raise their daughter, where Buddy encounters an entirely new set of life obstacles.Ībout: Last night I read this Hollywood Reporter piece on Will Ferrell, who’s coming out with his first TV show, The Shrink Next Door. ![]() Changing seasons were also discussed but then scrapped because the scope of putting that into the game was much too large and served little importance to the game as a whole. The original concept had the game take place on a train instead of a boat, but the team decided that it did not really fit what they wanted. They wanted to make a game that handled death in a way that felt more personal and intimate, referencing the loss of family and loved ones. She passes through the Everdoor with Daffodil and they both become a constellation in the sky.Ĭreative director Nicolas Guérin mentions that the game's stories are based on their own experiences of loss. With her purpose fulfilled, Stella sails back to the Everdoor with Daffodil one last time. Hades reveals that Stella's real body is on the verge of death in the real world, and it is now her time to pass through the Everdoor. Hades then questions Stella's motivations, wondering whether her desire to help spirits is altruistic or simply a selfish means to ease her own insecurities.Įventually, Stella sends off the last spirit through the Everdoor and she has one final confrontation with Hades. Hades shows Stella images of what is apparently her past life as a palliative care nurse, taking care of terminally ill patients before falling terminally ill herself. As Stella sends off more and more spirits, she begins occasionally encountering Hades, in the form of a giant owl. ![]() Each of them gives an emotional send off as they thank Stella for everything she has done for them, leaving her a spirit flower to remember them by. However, Stella must begin sending the spirits to the Everdoor. As she picks up more spirits and collects resources, Stella expands the ship and its capabilities further. In order to assist with her journey, Charon gifts both Stella and Daffodil with the magical Everlight.Īfter Charon passes through the Everdoor, Stella procures a ship of her own and begins travelling the world, picking up spirits and helping them fulfill their last wishes while befriending them along the way. The player takes the role of Stella, accompanied by her pet cat Daffodil, who takes over from the mythological Charon as the new Spiritfarer, a ferrymaster who must sail the sea to find spirits and grant their last wishes and finally take them to the Everdoor, a gateway to the afterlife. The game also has vendors that sell items such as seeds for the player's gardens, and furniture to decorate their ship, giving the game a more personalized experience. The characters that Stella meets along the way also give the player mini-games to play for materials and in-game currency that are relevant to the spirit's character. These new sections that are added to the ship are placed like puzzle pieces, stacked up on top of one another in any way that fits. While uncovering more of each spirit's backstory, they sail their way to crossing over to the afterlife through the Everdoor. This leads to the player collecting materials while on their journey to build kitchens, gardens, and other home amenities to help the spirits feel more at home. You can also save only the raw files to your camera while sending the JPEGs to your computer. ![]() Smart Shooter allows you to view captures when connected to a computer and to save captures to the camera card. Tether Tools’ solution to this is its Smart Shooter software. The disadvantage to my setup is the Nikon system itself, which doesn’t support image review or saving in camera when connected to a computer. Tether Tools offers an accessory cold shoe to mount the Air Direct to a camera bracket or other device when your hot shoe is occupied. The freedom wireless tethering offers in the studio, especially with a wireless connection to lighting, is wonderful. The JPEG transfers instantaneously and the larger raw file follows right behind. I overcame this by setting the camera to record raw and JPEG. Using it with the Air Direct is functionally the same as with a wired connection other than the slight lag time for transferring a raw file. I also successfully tested several cameras tethered to my iPad and Android phone using Tether Tools Air Remote apps.Īlthough I tested the Air Direct with Lightroom, my software of choice for tethering has always been Capture One. Every combination performed flawlessly when tethered to both Mac and Windows computers with subtle differences for each camera-software-operating system combination. I tested the Air Direct with a range of Nikons (D800E, Z 6, D750) coupled with Capture One, Lightroom, and Smart Shooter software. Studio photographers will enjoy the freedom of wireless tethering coupled with the ability to evaluate a large preview on their studio monitor. ![]() Even though he doesn't have an ending in any of the games he is present in, Kohryu does have a special opening before he fights Kenji.Strangely, whenever Kohryu takes damage, human blood is drawn, despite him being a robot. If the first move is blocked or if the opponent is jumping, as the Beast Drive only strikes opponents vulnerable to low attack, Kohryu will be vulnerable to any attack.
